X-ray vision is the ability to perceive visual data inside and beyond the surface layers of a volume of matter. This is accomplished through the projection of electromagnetic radiation similar to that of an x-ray. In speculative fiction, this is an ability common amongst the alien members of the Kryptonian race featured in comic book titles published by DC Comics, specifically, the Superman family of titles as well as its various media spin-offs and adaptations. All Kryptonians who are active in an environment where they can harness solar energy from a yellow sun possess this ability to some extent or another.
One of the restrictions of X-ray vision is that the possessor cannot use it to see through items made out of lead. Items that have a heavy percentage of lead in their chemical makeup also obscures the clarity of vision for those using this power.
