Wonder Woman is the code-name for a fictional comic book superhero featured in titles published by DC Comics. Although there have been several characters who have gone by the name "Wonder Woman", the most well-known is Princess Diana, who has also operated under the alias of Diana Prince. Wonder Woman was created by writer William Moulton Marston and artist Harry G. Peter. She first appeared in the untitled third story from All-Star Comics #8 in January, 1942. The story would later carry the title "Introducing Wonder Woman" in reprint editions. Following her introductory appearance, Wonder Woman went on to become the title feature in the Sensation Comics anthology series, beginning with Sensation Comics #1, also released in January, 1942. Six months later, she received her own ongoing series, Wonder Woman, Volume 1. Wonder Woman's character is defined as an Amazon princess from the Greek island nation known as Paradise Island, later named Themyscira. She learns about the outside world after rescuing a United States Air Force pilot named Steve Trevor. Upon completing the "Bullets and Bracelets" competition, Diana earned the right to serve as an emissary to Man's World, and donned the red, blue and gold colors of Wonder Woman. Her primary tools of crime-fighting included the unbreakable Lasso of Truth and a pair of metal bracelets, which she used to deflect bullets. Modern permutations of the character have evolved her into that of a warrior, who also fights injustice with a sword and shield. Other characters who have gone by the code-name of Wonder Woman include Diana's mother, Hippolyta, who in retcon stories, operated as Wonder Woman during World War II, as well as Artemis, who replaced Princess Diana for a time in the 1990s.
