Synopsis[]
At the 50th Street Depot in New York City, several drug dealers are accompanied by three NYPD officers in what appears to be a drug deal. These individuals are all being controlled by some sort of external influence however and are trying out different voice patterns in order to blend in. As they peruse a map of New York City, another man walks into the area. The others feel that this man will never accept the new reality, so they all open fire upon him.
Elsewhere, young Alex Gregson - also under the influence of some mysterious possessing entity, brandishes a laser blaster and fires at Wolverine. Wolverine dodges the blast, and gives chase, but when he emerges from the alley, the boy is gone. A homeless man tells him that he saw the boy get into a mail van and drive off. From above, Alex looks down from some construction scaffolding and fires a blast, striking a man at a newsstand. This is all to lure Wolverine into coming after him. He then disintegrates a uniformed NYPD officer. His next shot hits Wolverine in the shoulder. He heals from the blast, but discovers that the weapon has also fired a projectile, which is still lodged within his shoulder.
Wolverine continues chasing after Alex, and scales the scaffolding of the construction site. Alex asks him several odd questions, and Wolverine immediately knows that the boy is not in control of his mind. The entity decides to test Wolverine's moral center and leaps off the top of the scaffolding towards his doom. He wants to see if Wolverine will allow the human host to die. Through the course of this, Alex drops the disintegrator ray. Wolverine dives after him and does a tuck and roll to protect Alex's physical form from the impact of landing.
Away from the weapon, Alex Gregson appears to have returned back to normal. As police and ambulances converge on the scene, a mail carrier picks up the laser weapon. He kills the homeless man that Wolverine had spoken to earlier. Before the man can fire a second time, Nick Fury, Jr. of S.H.I.E.L.D. rappels down from the S.H.I.E.L.D. flying car and shoots him. Before Wolverine can collect the disintegrator ray, it rises in the air and flies off. Nick has a tracker on it, but Wolverine also wants to get the bullet in his shoulder looked at. To make things even more mysterious, Wolverine looks up to take note of the sudden appearance of Uatu the Watcher and says, "Now I know we're in trouble".

Notes & Trivia[]
- The character of Wolverine was created by writer Len Wein and artists John Romita, Sr. and Herb Trimpe. Most comic fans credit writer Chris Claremont with truly defining the character, however. He was introduced in a cameo stinger at the end of Incredible Hulk #180 in October, 1974, but made his first full appearance in the following issue, Incredible Hulk #181. In May, 1975, he became a member of the X-Men in Giant-Size X-Men #1. He has been associated with the X-Men in some capacity, either as a team member of an ally, ever since.
