- "Mothra" is a reference to the Japanese kaiju monster of the same name, who has also been referred to by the proper name, Mosura. Mothra is a giant caterpillar that transforms into a flying moth creature and has been featured in numerous Godzilla related films of the 1960s as well as it's own film series.
