The Waverider is a fictional space vessel and time machine featured in the DC Television Universe. It appears prominently in the CW Network television series Legends of Tomorrow. It is named after a DC Comics character, Matthew Ryder, who is also known as Waverider.

Description[]

The Waverider is a futuristic space vessel with time travel capabilities. It was developed by the Time Masters and outfitted with an artificial intelligence named Gideon. The first captain of the Waverider was Rip Hunter, who used it to recruit a team of adventurers dubbed the Legends. After Rip took leave of the group, he left Sara Lance in command of the ship.

When the Legends "broke time", the group was temporarily disbanded, and Rip Hunter took custody of the Waverider. He spent the next five years developing an organization known a the Time Bureau, whose function was to fix the ever-growing anachronisms created by the Legends' mistakes. The Waverider was converted into a training simulator.

When the members of the group got back together, they got a hold of Rip, who still blamed them for all of the problems that he was now trying to fix. Sara Lance decided that they were capable of correcting their own mistakes and stole the Waverider. Agents of the Time Bureau pursued them across the timestream in an effort to sanction the ship.

Capabilities[]

  • Self-sustenance: The Waverider maintains its own life-support systems including oxygen supply, as well as artificial gravity, which means you can eat soup, or even Ma Jackson's pecan pie without making a mess.
  • Time travel: It's a time machine, so yeah. It can travel backwards and forwards through time.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Gideon artificial intelligence and interface was developed by a futuristic version of Barry Allen.
  • There are numerous accomadations for its various crew members, including nine bedrooms. Despite this, a noted design flaw is that there is only one bathroom on the ship.
  • There are few technological wonders that are capable of traversing both time and space. Another such device is called a TARDIS, and is a pivotal aspect of the Doctor Who television franchise.
