Watchmen is an American live-action television series of the superhero fantasy and alternative history genres. Television, DC Entertainment, White Rabbit Productions, and Paramount Television. It began airing on HBO on October 20th, 2019 with a nine-episode season order.
Watchmen takes place in an alternative, contemporary reality in the United States, in which masked vigilantes became outlawed due to their violent methods. Notes & Trivia[]
- Watchmen, and all related characters and concepts were created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons. Copyright ownership on the franchise belongs to DC Comics. The original comic series ran for twelve issues from September, 1986 to October, 1987. The series received widespread critical acclaim and has been adapted into a feature film in 2009, a television series in 2019 and a motion comic.
- The tagline for this series is "Nothing Ever Ends..."
- Watchmen airs on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom.
- Franchise creator Alan Moore has always expressed an extreme dislike of adaptations of his work, and has actively distanced himself from such projects, even going so far as to request that his name be removed from films and programs based on his work. As such, Alan Moore's name appears nowhere in the credits of this series.
- Damon Lindelof stepped away from the series following its initial nine-episode arc, citing that "These nine episodes are sort of everything that I have to say at this point about Watchmen", raising questions as to the future of the project. Although nobody has been appointed to replace Lindelof, HBO has not given confirmation as to whether the series would continue. In light of this, Watchmen was re-classified as a limited series in February, 2020 pending further decisions.
- The events of this show take place in the continuity of the Watchmen comic book series, and not necessarily the continuity of the 2009 Watchmen feature film. So yes, there are squiddies.
- The events of this series takes place thirty-four years after the events of the Watchmen comic book series.
