Warlord of Mars refers to the collected works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs as it relates to the character of John Carter, and his supporting cast of characters. The adventures of John Carter blends elements of the Science Fiction and Sword & Sorcery genres, giving rise to the "Science Fantasy" subgenre, of which this series is considered a hallmark. Related media has been released as serial narratives, novels, feature films, and comic books.
The franchise began as serialized story chapters published in All-Story Magazine. The first serial, which came to be known as A Princess of Mars, was first published in issues of All-Story Magazine in 1912. It was first compiled in hardcover novel format in 1917 by publisher A.C. McClurg. There were ten subsequent novels published following A Princess of Mars between 1913 and 1940. All novels have been re-issued by varying publishers over the years including Del Rey. The copyright for these stories expired in the United States and, thus, now resides in the public domain. The text is available via Project Gutenberg.
The series introduces the character of John Carter, who is a 19th century cavalry soldier from Virginia. During the American Civil War, he finds himself mysteriously whisked away to the planet Mars, which is called "Barsoom" by the natives. Because of the planet's lower gravity, John Carter enjoys the benefit of enhanced strength the ability to leap great distances. He encounters a race of green-skinned six-armed Barsoomians known as Tarks, and earns their respect and becomes a member of their ranks. John's adventures lead him to meet the beautiful princess, Dejah Thoris of the city-state of Helium, and he becomes a pivotal figure in the growing war between the red-skinned Martians of Helium and the Tarks.
A Princess of Mars was adapted into a direct-to-video film called Princess of Mars, which was produced by The Asylum. It was written and directed by Mark Atkins and produced by David Michael Latt, David Rimawi, and Paul Bales. It starred Antonio Sabato, Jr. in the lead role of John Carter with former porn star Traci Lords as Dejah Thoris.
A major feature film, John Carter, was produced by Walt Disney Productions in 2012. It was written and directed by Andrew Stanton , and co-written by Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon. The film stars Taylor Kitsch as John Carter with Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris.
