Walter M. Scott was a film and television set designer. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 7th, 1906. His first professional film work was an uncredited role in the 1937 crime thriller Think Fast, Mr. Moto starring Peter Lorre. His first work in the sci-fi genre was the obscure 1957 b-film Kronos.
Throughout the mid to late 1960s, Walter M. Scott worked on several television programs for Irwin Allen Productions. He was a set designer on Irwin Allen's popular Lost in Space from 1965 to 1968. He was the set designer on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea from 1964 to 1968 as well as the Irwin vehicle Land of the Giants from 1968 to 1970.
In 1968, Walter M. Scott was the set designer on the Arthur P. Jacobs film Planet of the Apes. Part of his duties included putting together the elaborate Ape City set pieces and the interior sets of Doctor Zira's veterinary hospital and Doctor Zaius' council chambers. In 1970, he returned to the franchise for Beneath the Planet of the Apes where he had the additional responsibilities of putting together the subterranean ruins of the mutant stronghold of 40th century New York City. He returned to the franchise one final time in 1971 for Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
Walter M. Scott's final film work was the 1973 John Erman movie Ace Eli and Rodger of the Skies. The film was based on a story by sci-fi icon Steven Spielberg. Scott passed away in Los Angeles, California on February 2nd, 1989 at the age of 82.
