Marvel Universe[]
Venom is the name attributed to several different individuals who have appeared in comic book titles published by Marvel Comics. The person who becomes Venom is actually a gestalt being consisting of an alien symbiote from a planet called Klyntar and a human host. The whole mess began in the mid 1980s when a little-known superhero known as Spider-Man participated in a big galactic magilla known as the "Superhero Secret Wars". While fighting to survive on an alien planet, Spider-Man picked up the symbiote, which he used as alternate costume. Before long however, the symbiote tried to take full possession of Spider-Man, so he ditched it in favor of his classic threads. The symbiote found a new and more willing host however, Eddie Brock. The symbiote played upon Brock's more aggressive desires, and together they took on the role of Venom. At first, they were presented as a major antagonist to Spider-Man, but later developed into more an anti-hero as Venom took on the title of "Lethal Protector". Since then, there have been numerous symbiotes and others who have bonded with the Brock symbiote as well.
