Officer Cherry of the New Jersey State Police visits the Trident Rest Stop along the Atlantic City Expressway in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He speaks with proprietor Kareen Baker about a series of gruesome beheadings that had taken place along the Expressway over the course of several weeks. Cherry suspects that Kareem might be involved, but Kareem repeatedly tells him that he was with his friends last evening. The cop becomes more aggressive and insulting. Karem stabs Cherry to death and cuts off his head, which he stores with his "friends", which is a collection of severed heads in a closet. The following day, Kareem begins offering his customers a new cherry-flavored brand of beef jerky.
Three guys in a car pull up to the Burger Heaven drive-thru and attempt to order food. A voice aggressively tells them that they are closed. Angered by the rudeness, the driver - Derek, and his two friends pull around, park, then barge into the restaurant to confront the cashier. The cashier takes on a demonic countenance then murders all three customers. As he is dragging the last body into the back, he begins singing "Jesus loves me, this I know... for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong... we are weak, but he is strong".
Bryn Tilton works is a mortician operating out of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Along with her assistant, Mung, she analyzes the bodies of various monsters that are discovered and kept under wraps - both literally, and figuratively. While Bryn is dissecting the corpse of werewolf, Mung brings in the body of a sea monster that had been fished out of the ocean. As she begins to examine the creature, it proves that it is not dead, and springs to life. It attacks Bryn and Mung, but Bryn manages to leap upon a table and rip out the cables from a ceiling light fixture and uses it to electrocute it. The following night, Bryn goes dancing with her friend Steph and shows off her new waterproof scale-hide boots.
This volume includes a framing sequence, in which a sexy movie theater usher named Velvet encourages an over-eager patron to stay for the Halloween film screenings.
The framing sequence of this graphic novel takes place on Halloween. Halloween is a secular holiday celebrated every year on the evening of October 31st. Its origins date back several centuries to the Celtic Feast of Samhain. It was believed that on the night of the festival, the doorway between the lands of the living and the dead were thin, enabling spirits from the afterworld entrance into the real world.
