"The Vampire Chronicles" is the collective umbrella of fiction novels detailing the lives and passions of various vampire characters and the world that they exist in. The books were written by author Anne Rice and began in 1976 with her seminal novel Interview with the Vampire. Nearly ten years after its initial release, Rice returned to her world with the first of many sequel books, The Vampire Lestat. This was followed by The Queen of the Damned in 1988 and The Tale of the Body Thief in 1992. This was followed by Memnoch the Devil in 1995 and The Vampire Armand in 1998.

From there, Rice began connecting the world of The Vampire Chronicles, with that of another series, The Lives of the Mayfair Witches. The first of three crossover novels was Merrick, published in 2000, this circled back to Blood and Gold in 2001, which was a Vampire Chronicles story, then crossing back over with the Mayfairs again in Blackwood Farm in 2002 (which takes place after the Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy), and then Blood Canticle in 2003.

Rice took a break from vampiric horror for a bit to explore subjects of Christianity. It wasn't until 2014 that she returned to The Vampire Chronicles with Prince Lestat, which was the eleventh book in the series, including the crossover novels. This was followed up by Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis in 2016 and then Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat in 2018, which is the final book in the series.

The Vampire Chronicles have been adapted into different forms of media over the years. In 1994, the first book in the series Interview With the Vampire was brought to the big screen by director Neil Jordan with a screenplay written by Rice herself. The film starred Brad Pitt in the POV role of Louis de Pointe du Lac with Tom Cruise taking up the mantle of foppish French vampire Lestat de Lioncourt. Initially, Rice was quite outspoken over her displeasure at the casting of Tom Cruise, but after seeing the final cut, publicly praised Cruise's performance. The movie is also known for the casting of a young Kirsten Dunst in the role of Claudia the Vampire.

Hollywood skipped past adapting The Vampire Lestat and went straight to a big screen production of Queen of the Damned, though many elements from The Vampire Lestat were retained. The movie was directed by Michael Rymer with a screenplay written by Scott Abbott and Michael Petroni. None of the cast members from Interview with the Vampire returned for this sequel, and the lead role of Lestat was now played by Stuart Townsend. The movie also starred rising pop star Aaliyah as the eponymous Queen of the Damned, Akasha. This was Aaliyah's final role as she died in a plane crash over the Bahamas on August 25th, 2001 at the age of 22.

There have also been several comic book adaptations of novels within the Vampire Chronicles universe. The first was the adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, which was published by the now defunct Innovation Comics. The series ran for twelve issues from 1991 to 1994. Innovation followed this up with The Vampire Lestat, which also ran for twelve issues beginning in 1991. The publishing company Sicilian Dragon began an adaptation of Tale of the Body Thief in 1999, which was intended as a twelve-issue series, but was discontinued after issue #4. The series was supposed to continue as a graphic novel, but this never manifested.

Franchise creator Anne Rice died from complications of a stroke at a hospital in Rancho Mirage, California on December 11th, 2021, at the age of 80. According to a statement from Rice's son Christopher Rice, the family planned to inter her at the family mausoleum at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. Anne Rice was laid to rest in January, 2022.
