An uzi is a type of firearm. It is an Israeli-manufactured machine gun, also referred to as a machine pistol. It was developed by Uziel Gal in the 1940s and first pressed into service in 1954 and used by the Israel Defense Forces. The weapon utilizes a blowback-operated open-bolt design, which exposes the breech end of the barrel, and improves cooling during periods of continuous fire.
The Uzi is a relatively lightweight weapon. The receiver is stamped sheet metal. Despite its weight, even when fired in full auto, it is very controllable and fairly accurate. The weapon features either a collapsible stock or a wooden stock (though these are rare). It is a blowback-operated weapon, with a telescoping bolt (in which the bolt wraps around the breech) and fires from an open bolt. The breech is not mechanically locked; however, the breech block is heavy enough to prevent the breech from opening until gas pressure in the barrel has fallen significantly. The firing pin does not float freely in the bolt.
In fiction[]
The Uzi was THE weapon to use in the 1980s. Every baddie, terrorist, henchman and wannabe ass-kicker was seen brandishing an uzi at some point. In 1984, a futuristic cyborg known as a T-800 Terminator acquired an uzi, as well as several other weapons, from a Los Angeles gun store owner in his quest to murder everyone bearing the first name of "Sarah" and the last name of "Connor". The uzi also proved effective at taking down members of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Around that same time over in San Francisco, a militant Resistance soldier named Ham Tyler used an uzi as his personal weapon of choice when it came to fighting up against alien invaders known as Visitors. Many were the lizard-faced redcoats who fell before the onslaught of Ham's trigger-happy exploits.
The DC Comics vigilante anti-hero known as Wild Dog used many weapons in his crime-fighting arsenal. In addition to various handguns, and other machine guns, he also used an uzi.
