"Chapter Three: The Heart of a Lover"[]

Elizabeth and Robert

Elizabeth and Robert.

Elizabeth Lavenza meets with an older gentlemen named Robert on a side street in the village. Robert denounces Henry Frankenstein's treatment of her and professes his own love towards Elizabeth. Elizabeth politely turns him away, citing that their meeting is improper. After Elizabeth leaves, Robert walks down the street, but is accosted by a deranged madman, who bashes him across the head then steals his billfold.

Sometime later, Victor Moritz is driving the carriage to bring Elizabeth home after her bittersweet reunion with her fiancé Henry. The two talk about Henry's current state of mind and Elizabeth even ponders whether some of Robert's remains were used in Frankenstein's insane experiment. Neither of them are aware that young Paul has stowed away on the back of the carriage. They spot him as they pull into the Frankenstein residence. Victor tries to shoo him away, but Elizabeth takes a liking to the boy and invites him inside. She provides him with food and Paul tells her about how he had been hiding in Henry's laboratory. Elizabeth reveals a bit of her own history to Paul and tells him how she too was an orphan until she was adopted by Henry's mother. She goes on to say how she grew up with Henry and eventually came to fall in love with him.

Elizabeth - UMF 3

Elizabeth.

Back at the watchtower, Henry Frankenstein and Professor Waldman discover Fritz's hanging corpse. The Frankenstein Monster is in a state of frenzy and Henry tries to drive him back with a torch. Walden comes up behind the creature and injects him in the back with a sedative, but the creature backhands him then turns to start throttling Henry. The drug quickly takes hold and the creature collapses.

There is a sudden knock at the watchtower door. Henry answers it and sees that it is Victor Moritz. He tells him that Elizabeth and his father are coming up the hill. They have come to take him home. Henry collapses in a state of exhaustion. Waldman lets Victor and the Baron take Henry away, promising to dispose of the creature in a painless manner.

When the Baron finally gets his son back to his estate, he finds Paul standing in the foyer. Feeling as if the child is an unwelcome nuisance, he orders a footman to take him into town and leave him with the authorities. He chuffs that it is high time "that things returned to normal". The footman drive the boy into the village, but Paul, refusing to return to an orphanage, jumps off of the carriage and runs off. Hiding in the shadows, he whispers "Pa... what do I do now?"

Monster kills Waldman

The Monster kills Waldman.

At the watchtower, Professor Waldman has the Frankenstein Monster on an operating table. He carefully selects the instruments he plans to use to humanely euthanize the creature. The monster suddenly awakens as Waldman is leaning over him and grabs him by the throat, strangling him to death. The monster then lumbers out into the night.

In the days that follow, the wedding of Henry and Elizabeth has finally arrived. Baron Frankenstein offers cheers to the guests, but Elizabeth is not in a particularly festive mood. She is still bitter that the Baron sent Paul away. She then speaks with Henry and says that she feels that they have rushed the wedding. She feels that Henry's heart has grown cold. She professes her love to him and asks if he loves her still. Henry hesitates, but before he can answer, Victor bursts through the doors with news that Doctor Waldman has been murdered. Pulling Henry aside, he tells him that the monster has been spotted in the hills, terrorizing the countryside.

Elizabeth sits alone in her bridal dress in the master bedroom. She looks down at the bridal bouquet she is holding and tears begin running down her face. Suddenly, the Frankenstein Monster appears in her room. She screams, then says "Please! Don't!" and the monster halts his advance. She then faints in the creature's arms. The Frankenstein Monster quickly leaves the room.
