The United States Air Force is one of the five main branches of the United States Armed Forces. Up until 1947, the United States Air Force was a branch of the US Army. Specializing in the field of aerial combat, it became it's own separate division on September 18th, 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947.
The United States Air Force plays heavily in the realm of science fiction, particularly mediums that involve large scale military or extraterrestrial incursions upon US soil. In addition to making appearances in various alien invasion movies such as War of the Worlds and Independence Day, the USAF is also the central backdrop behind the Stargate multimedia franchise. In Stargate, the United States Air Force holds jurisdiction over the fictional subdivision called Stargate Command, whose headquarters lies beneath Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado.
