- Klaus Hargreeves throws some hippie wisdom upon a potential follower when he says, "Don't go chasing waterfalls. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to". This is part of the main chorus from the song "Waterfalls" by TLC, which won't be written for another thirty-plus years.
- Raymond Chestnut quotes lines from the William Shakespeare play "King Henry IV". The lines are taken from Act III, Scene I. Another line is taken from "Twelfth Night", Act II, Scene V.
- Number Five makes reference to Batman in this issue. Batman is a DC Comics super-hero known for street-level fighting skills and gadgetry. When describing his brother Diego Hargreeves to Elliott, Number Five says "Imagine Batman, then aim lower".
