Biography[]
Tobe Levine was a professional wrestler, or "rassler", who had come upon hard times. He performed under the in-ring name of "The Mangler". He considered himself the strongest athlete in the business, but could not get signed to any matches. He believed that nobody wanted to compete against him because he would "muss 'em up" too much.
One evening, while walking home from Frank's Gym, the Mangler walked underneath a street light. Suddenly, a powerful levitation ray pulled him through the light and he re-materialized inside the laboratory lair of the Masked Marauder. Along with two other men of note, the safe-cracking Dancer, and criminal strategist Wilder "The Brain" Berne, he was encased inside of a glass tube.
The Masked Marauder used his technology to siphon life energy from all three individuals to empower a robot android that he called the Tri-Man. From Tobe, he borrowed a portion of his strength. [1]
Although they were abducted against their will, Mangler had no qualms about serving the Marauder and his goals. The Masked Marauder captured Daredevil and brought him to his laboratory. Daredevil inadvertently broke open the canister containing Dancer. While fighting Dancer, he hurled his body into the two remaining containers, freeing the Mangler and the Brain. Mangler threw a punch at Daredevil, who ducked then crawled under his legs to come up behind him, whereupon he kicked him squarely in the seat of his pants. To add further humiliation, Daredevil told him that he had "...no time to waste on Muscle-Beach rejects". [2]
