The Thunderbolt Pen is a fictional mystical item featured in comic books published by DC Comics. It is associated with the Justice Society of America line of titles. It first appeared in the "Still Life in the Fast Lane" story from The Flash Volume 2 #134 in February, 1998.

Description[]

To all outward appearances, this item appeared as an ordinary ball point pen, albeit pink in color. In reality, it was a mystical containment vessel that housed the essence of Yz, a powerful genie that was often referred to as the Thunderbolt.

DC Universe[]

The pen was originally in the possession of Johnny Thunder during the time that Johnny was residing at an assisted living facility while dealing with senility. The pen housed a powerful djinn entity known as Yz, which Johnny referred to in his youth as the Thunderbolt. Johnny's old ally Jay Garrick borrowed the pen, which he later used to sign some autographs outside. Without any knowledge as to the pen's significance, he absent-mindedly gave it to a young boy named Jakeem Williams. [1]

While running about complaining about the cold, Jakeem shouted "Say you love Satan". The phonetic pronunciation of "say you" released the Thunderbolt from the pen. [2]

After Jakeem was shunted into the Fifth Dimension inside the pen by the Spectre, Rick Tyler took possession of the pen. He brought it to Salem, Massachusetts hoping that Doctor Fate could find a way to free Jakeem from the pen. [3]

Stargirl[]

The pen was one of several important relics left behind by the late Justice Society of America. When Pat Dugan brought Courtney Whitmore to the abandoned Justice Society Headquarters, she took note of the pen, but Pat warned her that this was the most dangerous item amongst the relics. When Pat was elsewhere, Courtney returned to the HQ and took the leftover JSA weapons and tools, including the pen. [4]

Back at home, she warily inspected the pen, clicking it several times. When nothing appeared to happen, Courtney scoffed and threw the pen into a holder. After she left the room, an impish cackle emanated from the pen. [5]

Notes[]

  • The Thunderbolt Pen has also appeared in episodes of the Stargirl live-action television series. It first appeared in episode 1x03, "Icicle".
