  • This is the third and final episode of The Others directed by Mick Garris. He also directed the series pilot episode as well as episode 1x06, "Luciferous".
  • Mary Jane Kelly is based on an actual historical murder victim. She is the fifth and final verified victim of Jack the Ripper. Her body was found at 13 Miller's Court, Dorset Street on November 9th, 1888.
  • George Hutchinson is an actual Jack the Ripper suspect, who submitted a formal statement to police detectives following the murder of Mary Jane Kelly.
  • Clive Barker, who plays English suspect George Hutchinson in this episode, is a noted English novelist, film director, screenwriter and artist. He is best known for his works The Hellbound Heart and Cabal, both of which have been adapted into the feature films Hellraiser and Nightbreed respectively. Barker also wrote the short story "The Forbidden", which was retooled as the film Candyman.
  • A more fictionalized account of the final fate of Mary Jane Kelly is presented in the 2003 film From Hell. In the film, the fifth Ripper victim is mis-identified as Mary Jane Kelly due to the fact that the body, rendered unidentifiable due to the brutal nature of the murder, was discovered in Mary Jane Kelly's residence. The end of the film reveals that Mary Jane Kelly left London and returned to her home in Ireland with the infant son of Prince Albert.

Allusions[]

  • The title of this episode is taken from "Don't Dream It's Over", which is an Australian pop song recorded by Crowded House and appeared on their self-titled 1986 debut album.
  • Jack the Ripper is the name attributed to an unidentified serial killer who claimed the lives of at least five women in the Whitechapel district of London, England in the Autumn of 1888. The five women who are considered canonical Ripper victims were all prostitutes working in London's East End and include Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride and Mary Jane Kelly. Several other victims who were murdered around this time have also been linked to Jack the Ripper, but there is not enough evidence to assertively link them to Jack the Ripper. The mystery surrounding the murders and the individual who committed them has sparked the public consciousness and debate rages to this day over the true identity of Jack the Ripper.
  • Reference is made to Mikhail Baryshnikov in this episode. Mikhail Baryshnikov is a Latvian-American ballet dancer and choreographer.

Quotes[]

  • Elmer Greentree: Maybe fate draws people together, in one lifetime or another; or maybe nobody was calling anybody; maybe it was simply a matter of two souls meeting at the far end of time. One empty, the other overflowing. Or maybe it doesn't make any sense at all. Maybe, ahhh... it just happened.
