Edward "Tex" Sawyer is a fictional cannibal and a central antagonist featured in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre film series. Played by actor Viggo Mortensen, he appeared in the 1990 film sequel, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.
Biography[]
Edward Sawyer was a Caucasian male member of the cannibalistic Sawyer family and lived in the U.S. state of Texas in the late 1980s. His nickname was Tex, and he hated being called by his given name. As being one of the more seemingly well-adjusted and attractive members of the family, Tex was often used as the "lure", by which they could coax potential victims into a state of vulnerability, whereupon they would be captured, butchered, and then consumed by the Sawyers.
Equipment[]
- Axe: Tex Sawyer used an axe during his fight with Benny.
Notes & Trivia[]
- The character of Tex Sawyer was created by director Jeff Burr and writer David J. Schow based on concepts originally developed by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel.
- Final fate: Set on fire and burned to death by Benny.
- Actor Viggo Mortensen received third billing in Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.
- Tex Sawyer's sexuality is somewhat ambiguous. In one scene, he is shown wearing a woman's cooking apron and has nail polish on, implying that he might have latent (or even overt) homosexual proclivities. Tex does not demonstrate any homosexual behavior in the film however.
- The continuity between this film and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is very unclear, though a narrative given at the beginning of the movie suggests that both films take place in the same internal continuity. However, it is unclear what Tex's relationship to the original Sawyer family members is.
- Tex's relationship to the rest of the Sawyer household in this film is also unclear. In all likelihood, he is Anne's son, and a sibling of Alfredo, Tinker, and Junior.
Victims[]
- No established victims.
- It is possible that Tex may have likely murdered people in the past, but he was most often used as a lure to draw victims in so that Leatherface could conduct that actual execution.
