  • This is the third film in the Terminator franchise to feature Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. She previously appeared in The Terminator, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
  • This film opens with archival footage of Sarah Connor from Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The scene also includes off-camera archival audio of Earl Boen as Doctor Peter Silberman from that film.
  • In terms of continuity, this film is considered a soft sequel, which is to say: It continues from the continuity of The Terminator, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which ignoring the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator: Salvation, and Terminator: Genisys, as well as the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles spin-off television series.
  • There are two key elements of the film which illustrates the series' departure from the previous three installments. Firstly, Sarah Connor is still alive, even though Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines established that the character had died of cancer. Secondly, John Connor is killed in 1988 while still a young boy. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles present an older John Connor who obviously survived the aftermath of Judgment Day.
  • Jude Collie played the physical role of young John Connor in this film, though original franchise star Edward Furlong was in fact cast to reprise the role. Furlong was used for motion capture scenes of his face and is credited in the film as a John Connor reference. Furlong was on-set for only one day, and expressed disappointment in the decision to kill off his character. As he said to Alex Leyba on YouTube, "They smoked my ass". [7]
  • Director Tim Miller and franchise creator & executive producer James Cameron had conflicting ideas on various parts of the script, including scenes projected for the Director's Cut. Miller admitted that he had problems with relinquishing control of a project, and cited that he could not foresee working with James Cameron on future projects as a result. [8]
  • In this film it is Sarah Connor who intones the famous phrase "I'll be back" after first meeting Grace and Dani. The phrase is usually spoken by the T-800 Terminator and first said in The Terminator, after the T-800 is first denied information at a police station.
  • This film introduces the concept of augmented humans. While John Connor was outfitted with cybernetic components in Terminator: Salvation, he did not share the enhanced strength, speed and reflexes that Grace demonstrates in this film.
  • This is the first credited film work for Mexican actress Alejandra Mayo. It is her first work in the science fiction genre.
