Description[]

The Ten Rings is a massive criminal cartel whose origins are shrouded in myth and legend. Their origins purportedly lie in the rise of a man named Xu Wenwu, who discovered the secret to increased longevity and great power when he acquired ten mystical rings. Sometimes referred to as either Master Khan or the Mandarin, Xu Wenwu carved out an empire that eventually came to span the globe. By the modern era, the Ten Rings operated as ten distinctive cells within one massive framework. Few knew who the true leader of the Ten Rings was, and fewer still had ever seen his face. Because of this, members of the Ten Rings came to regard the organization as not only a criminal cartel, but also an aspect of their faith.

In 2008, a sect of the Ten Rings was operating out of Gulmira in Afghanistan. This group served as local warlords and were led by a man named Raza Hamidmi Al-Wazar. Raza secretly conspired with American industrialist Obadiah Stane of Stark Industries to set a trap for the company's CEO, Tony Stark. The Ten Rings attacked Stark during a demonstration of the Jericho missile for members of the United States Air Force. Stark was critically injured by one of his own weapons and abducted by the Ten Rings. Led by Raza's lieutenant, Abu Bakaar, they forced him to work alongside another prisoner, Ho Yinsen, to construct weapons for them. Knowing that the Ten Rings would never allow either of them to live, Stark instead used the resources provided him to construct a crude rudimentary power armor. Ho Yinsen sacrificed his life to provide Tony enough time to escape. Donning the armor, Tony fought his way to freedom.

After a short recovery time back in the United States, Stark made upgrades to the armor to make it the world's most proficient personal defense system. He caught a news report of the Ten Rings conducting a terrorist attack in Gulmira using his tech, so he flew there in his new "Iron Man" armor to confront them. He easily defeated the terrorist cell led by Abu Bakaar and liberated the innocent villagers who had fallen victim to their efforts. Shortly thereafter, Stark learned about Obadiah Stane's involvement with the Ten Rings.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Ten Rings organization is named after the Mandarin's rings. In the comics, the Mandarin's rings were devices developed by an extraterrestrial dragon race known as the Makluans. They were used as components in the star drive of their ships. Initially, no origin for the rings was provided in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although a mid-credit scene from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings implied that their story might be developed further in a future project.
  • The Golden Daggers Club in Macau became the headquarters of the Ten Rings under the leadership of Xialing.
  • Some members of the organization, such as Jackson Norriss had a tattoo of the Ten Rings' logo on their arm, as a demonstration of their faith.
