The Temple of the Ancient One is a fictional residence features in comic books relating to the Doctor Strange family of titles. It is the home of Strange's mentor, the Ancient One, and is where Stephen Strange first became the Master of the Mystic Arts.

History[]

The Temple of the Ancient One was an ages-old temple located high atop a plateau in the mountains of Tibet. It was the home of an venerable mystic known only as the Ancient One who used the temple as his secret Sanctum Sanctorum during his time as Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth dimension. When the Ancient One retired this title, he became a teacher of occult lore and took on many students including Baron Karl Mordo, Doctor Anthony Druid, and Doctor Stephen Strange. Strange came to him many years ago, believing that the Ancient One possessed great powers of healing and could heal the inoperable nerve damage in his hands. The Ancient One saw through the brash arrogance of the man and realized that he might actually be a worthy successor. The Ancient One took Stephen under his wing and he resided in the temple for several years. During this time, he instructed him in the ways of the Mystic Arts and Strange became a powerful sorcerer. Another of the Ancient One's students, Baron Karl Mordo, sought only to learn the mystic arts as a means of power, not enlightenment. As the Ancient One predicted, Baron Mordo betrayed him and it was up to his new student, Doctor Strange to fight Mordo on the Ancient One's behalf. Seeing Strange's commitment towards being a force for good convinced him that he would become Earth's next Sorcerer Supreme. Even in the years following Strange's departure from the Ancient One, he would often return to the temple and sometimes even used it as a secondary base of operations.
