"Challenge" is the title to the first issue of the Tales of the Green Lantern Corps comic book limited series published by DC Comics. The story was written by Len Wein and plotted by Mike W. Barr with artwork by Joe Staton and inks by Frank McLaughlin. It was colored by Anthony Tollin and lettered by Ben Oda. The cover art illustration was rendered by Brian Bolland. The story was edited by Dick Giordano. This issue shipped with a May, 1981 cover date and carries a cover price of .50 cents per copy.

"Challenge!"[]

The Guardians of the Universe call together all 3,600 members of the Green Lantern Corps for a special emergency meeting on Oa. They warn the GL Corps of the coming of one of their oldest, most dangerous enemies -- Krona. Krona interferes with the assembly, causing the Central Power Battery to explode. Several Green Lanterns are killed in the explosion, and the others scramble to put out the fires caused by the ensuing green energy inferno.

  • The character of Hal Jordan, aka Green Lantern, was created by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane. He first appeared in Showcase #22 in October, 1959 in a story titled "S.O.S. Green Lantern!" He received his first ongoing Green Lantern comic book series in August, 1960.
  • This issue carries the approval stamp of the Comics Code Authority.
  • This issue is job number J-7252.
  • Krona first attempted to learn about the origin of the universe back in Green Lantern #40. His desire to seek forbidden knowledge ultimately led to the creation of the Multiverse.
