Tahiti is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia, located in the archipelago of the Society Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is the economic, cultural and political center of French Polynesia. The island was formed from volcanic activity and is high and mountainous with surrounding coral reefs.
Actress Vaitiare Bandera, who played the role of Sha're in the pilot episode of the TV series Stargate SG-1 entitled, "Children of the Gods", was born in Tahiti on August 15th, 1964. Actress Karina Lombard, who is best known for playing the role of Alana Mareva on the USA Network television series The 4400, was born in Tahiti on January 21st, 1969.
In the Godzilla film series, Tahiti was where a giant reptilian footprint was discovered. The size of the enormous animal that created it was caused by nuclear weapons testing in the French Polynesia island chain.
Tahiti played an enigmatic role in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. S.H.I.E.L.D. special agent Phil Coulson had been killed in battle by the Asgardian god, Loki. A top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. science team used alien technology to bring him back to life. In order to cope with the mental trauma of the procedure, they brainwashed him into believing that he had been recuperating in Tahiti. Whenever the subject was broached by his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Coulson always replied with, "It's a magical place". After discovering the truth about what had actually happened to him, someone asked him, "How was Tahiti?", to which he now replied, "It sucks".
In Marvel Comics continuity, retired mutant superhero Scott Summers and his new bride, Madelyne Pryor took their honeymoon in Tahiti. Unfortunately, Scott was whisked away to go participate in the Secret Wars on another planet. When that adventure concluded, he was instantly returned to Madelyne's bedside in their hut in Tahiti.
