Sword & Sorcery is a type of setting used in fictional media. It is a sub-genre of the fantasy style of story-telling, and typically involves worlds of a primitive or ancient era, barbarians, warriors, monsters, dragons, and of course - scantily clad women. Recurring themes presented in this genre usually include epic heroes engaged in adventure and combat against a prominent antagonist, while attempting to achieve some personal goal, solve a mystery, or effect geopolitical change.
The genre came into being during the pulp fiction era of the 1920s. American author, Robert E. Howard, is generally considered the pioneering "father" of the genre, and is responsible for the creation of characters such as Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, King Kull and Solomon Kane. Howard's Conan stories were first published in issues of Weird Tales, and later Fantasy Fan magazine.
