The Swamp ThingSwamp Thing is the name attributed to several different fictional characters featured in comic books published by DC Comics. It is also the name of the family comic titles featuring said character, dating all the way back to 1972. Additionally, the character of the Swamp Thing has also been spotlighted in two live-action feature films, a live-action television series and an animated series. The Swamp Thing has appeared in five ongoing comic book series to date, plus several specials, and has crossed over into other DC Comics titles. The first Swamp Thing series ran for 24 issues, from 1972 to 1976. The most well-known character to use the name of Swamp Thing is Alec Holland. Alec Holland was a scientist who attempted to create a bio-restorative formula aimed at benefitting mankind. When criminal agents sought to take control of Holland's work, he was exposed to his own experimental formula and submerged into swampy waters of Louisiana, whereupon he was transformed into a humanoid creature of vegetable matter. Chosen as the Earth Elemental by the Parliament of Trees, the Swamp Thing protects the swamps and surrounding environs from the machinations of mad scientist Anton Arcane. |
