Susan Oliver was an American television actress born Charlotte Gercke on February 13th, 1932 in New York City. Her first professional TV work was playing a character named Flora in the "A Day Before the Battle" episode of Studio One in Hollywood.

Career[]

Throughout the 1950s, Susan played in a variety of bit roles in variety programs such as Matinee Theatre, Armstrong Circle Theatre, Alcoa Theatre and The DuPont Show with June Allyson. Her first work in a science fiction venue was playing a character named Teenya in the "People Are Alike All Over" episode of The Twilight Zone. She co-starred in the episode with Roddy McDowall of Planet of the Apes fame and Vic Perrin, known mostly for his behind-the-scenes work as the Control voice in the 1960s anthology series The Outer Limits.

Oliver is best known to sci-fi fans however as Vina, a character of many faces featured in the original unaired pilot episode of Star Trek entitled "The Cage". The plot of the episode required Oliver to assume various appearances including that of an attractive young woman, a princess, an Orion slave girl and a disfigured crash survivor. Although this was Oliver's only role in the Star Trek franchise, an image of her as the Orion slave girl was featured as one of the closing stills on the season one end credits.

From 1967 to 1968, Susan Oliver played two different characters on the ABC sci-fi series The Invaders. She played a character named Stacy in the season one episode "The Ivy Curtain" and she played a character named Joan Seeley in the 26th episode of season two, "Inquisition".

Her final television role was playing a maid in the "Judy Miller, Come on Down" episode of the horror-themed anthology series Freddy's Nightmares in 1988.

Susan Oliver passed away from cancer in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California on May 10th, 1990. She was only 58-years-old.

  • Susan Oliver also did a little bit of work behind the camera. In 1977, she directed a short entitled Cowboysan. In 1982, she directed the "Hey, Look Me Over" episode of M*A*S*H and in 1983, she directed the "Fat Chance" episode of the M*A*S*H spin-off series Trapper John, M.D..
  • Susan Oliver was also a licensed pilot and won the award for Pilot of the Year in 1970. [1]
