- At one point, Donna Hanscum says "Hakuna Matata, lady". This is the name of a song featured in the 1994 Disney animated classic The Lion King. It is a Swahili term, which means "there isn't a problem", which is illustrated in a line of dialogue from the song, "It means no worries".
- Dean Winchester also makes reference to The Lion King. He references one of the most well-known songs from the movie "The Circle of Life", and refers to a vampire as Mufasa, who is the father of Simba the Lion King as voiced by James Earl Jones.
- Sam Winchester uses the alias of Agent Frehley in this episode. This is named after Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist for the rock and roll band KISS.

- Dean Winchester makes reference to Kumbaya, which is a 1920s spiritual song. It is performed as a campfire sing-a-long, and generally denotes a sense of positivity. The word is often used sarcastically to indicate a friendly environment.
- Jody Mills makes reference to "Charlie Manson" in this episode. Charles Manson was a cult leader from the 1960s who instigated at least two home invasion/murders, one of which included the gruesome murder of pregnant film actress Sharon Tate, who was the wife of film director Roman Polanski.
- Dean Winchester invokes the line "I love the smell of parchment in the morning", which is a re-wording of actor Robert Duvall's famous line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning! from the 1979 war film Apocalypse Now.
- Reference is made to Burning Man in this episode, which is an is an event focused on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance held annually in the western United States. Quotes[]
- Dean Winchester: Okay Mufasa, enough with the Circle of Life crap. You're a vampire, you're scum, end of story.
- Jody Mills: Honestly Donna, I just met the guy, but Doug seems like kind of a dick.
- Donna Hanscum: But he was my dick... I'm gonna hit the can, you know, where it's less gross.
....
- Donna Hanscum: So. Fresh corpse, jerk ex-husband, out of control teen. Wanna get blingo'd on my mini-bar and watch pay-per-view?
....
- Donna Hanscum: Wait, so, when we were at the weight loss spa.
- Dean Winchester: Monsters, sucking out your fat. We took care of it.
- Donna Hanscum: Ah jeez. I knew losing ten pounds that fast was too good to be true.
....
- Jody Mills: You okay?
- Donna Hanscum: Yeah, other than feeling like I wanna hurl. I just chopped off a vampire's head.
- Jody Mills: You were great at that.
- Donna Hanscum: Thanks.
