Superman is a series of animated film shorts that were released theatrically and were screened as a preview to feature films. They were developed by Max Fleischer using rotoscope technology, which he invented. The segments were directed by his younger brother Dave Fleischer. The film shorts premiered in the United States on September 26th, 1941. They starred the voice talents of Bud Collyer as Clark Kent, aka Superman, along with Joan Alexander as Lois Lane, and Jackson Beck as Perry White. Segments were narrated by Grant Richards.

  • Superman was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. He first appeared in Action Comics #1 in June, 1938 in a story called "Superman, Champion of the Opressed".
  • Coloring processes for the film shorts were produced by Technicolor.
  • Max Fleischer invented the rotoscope, which allowed animators to draw realistic movements using live-action images as a template.
  • The animation style of these film shorts inspired television producer Bruce Timm when developing Batman: The Animated Series. Early episodes of the show were highly influenced by the Fleischer style.
