  • The title of this episode is a play on the phrase "Shot through the heart", which was popularized as a lyric in the song "You Give Love a Bad Name" by Bon Jovi. It also refers to Winn Schott, who is one of the main characters of the show, and the spotlight character of this episode.
  • The character of Jacqueline Nimball is based on the character of Jack Nimball, who was another DC Comics character who called himself the Toyman. This version of the character made very few comic book appearances, but was a regular on the Challenge of the Super Friends cartoon series as a member of the Legion of Doom. Why the producers of the show switched him from a male to a female is unclear.
  • The flying monkey robots is based on the concept of the flying monkey henchmen (hench-animals?) as seen in the children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by author L. Frank Baum, which was popularized in the 1939 film feature film adaptation The Wizard of Oz.
  • Reference is made to the Wicked Witch of the West in this episode, who was the main antagonist from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
