Super Dimension Fortress Macross is a Japanese anime program of the science fiction genre. It was created by Shoji Kawamori and was produced by Tatsunoko Production. It was distributed in the U.S. market by Harmony Gold. It originally aired on MBS in Japan from October, 1982 to June, 1983, spanning a total of thirty-six episodes. The series is a precursor to the larger Robotech franchise that will evolve in subsequent years.

  • This series is the first part of two related franchises, the Super Dimension series, and the Macross series, both of which fall under the greater Robotech umbrella in U.S. distribution.
  • Character designs on the series are by Haruhiko Mikimoto of Artland.
  • The title of the show is named for the primary space vessel featured in the series. In most instances, the name is abbreviated to SDF-1 Macross, or just SDF-1.
  • The series was inspired by another anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, which was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and aired for forty-three episodes from 1979-1980.
