Star Wars: The Mandalorian is an American live-action television series of the science fiction and fantasy genres. It is based on the Star Wars multimedia franchise created by George Lucas. The series was developed for television by Jon Favreau and began airing on the Disney+ on-demand streaming service in 2019. The series stars Pedro Pascal as the Mandalorian, as well as MMA fighter Gina Carano, and actors Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito and Emily Swallow.
Star Wars was created by writer, director and executive producer George Lucas. It first captured the imaginations of movie goers in May, 1977 with its inaugural installment, which has since come to be identified by its full title, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The movie led to two sequels, a prequel trilogy, a third trilogy, several spin-off films, and numerous television programs, animated projects, novels, comic books, and video games, as well as developing into a merchandising giant.
This is the third Star Wars television series that is considered part of the canon continuity. The others being the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, and the Star Wars: Rebels animated series.
Ten episodes were confirmed for the first season upon announcement of the series with an estimated cost of $100 million. The actual season release only had eight episodes, however.
The setting for this series is "far away" from the influence of the New Republic.
