Notes & Trivia[]

  • Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry. The franchise first came into being a weekly science fiction television series that aired on NBC for three seasons from 1966 to 1969. It has since become a science fiction juggernaut and staple of the genre, spawning two separate film series, as well as numerous spin-off programs including Star Trek: The Animated Series, the 24th century-era shows, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise, as well as a prequel program called Star Trek: Discovery, which aired on CBS All Access.
  • The tagline for this film is "To protect the light, they fight in shadow".
  • This film serves as a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, which is where Michelle Yeoh's character, Philippa Georgiou, was first introduced.
  • Talks of doing a Star Trek spin-off series went as far back as late 2018 with the intent of focusing on Michelle Yeoh's character, Philippa Georgiou, in a spin-off project. The idea was to continue the character's adventures following season two of Star Trek: Discovery. [1] Development of Star Trek: Section 31 began in January, 2019, but the project was put on-hold due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Principal filming began on January 29th, 2024. It concluded on March 13th, 2024. The movie was shot in Ontario, Canada. [2]
  • A one-shot comic book special, Star Trek: Section 31 was published by IDW Publishing and released on February 5th, 2025. It was written by Alyssa Wong with artwork by Megan Levans.
  • There are thirty-one credited cast members in this film. This may in fact be intentional or perhaps a coincidence given that the subtitle of the film is "Section 31".

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, Star Trek: Section 31 has a Tomatometer score of 20% based on 40 posted critic reviews. It has 8 positive reviews and 32 negative reviews, averaging 4.40 out of 10. The film has a Popcornmeter score of 17% based on more than 1,000 user ratings, averaging 1.5 out of 5.
  • On Letterboxd, Star Trek: Section 31 has a weighted average review score of 1.85 out of 5 based on 4,690 user votes. [3]
  • Actors Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis also co-starred with each other in the 2022 feature film Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which they both won Academy Awards for the categories of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Yeoh) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Curtis).
