A spacewalk or "space walk", is when an astronaut free floats in outer space, usually tethered to a space vessel, space station or some other spaceborne module. This is sometimes done for the purposes of exploration, but is usually conducted when one needs to affect repairs or maintenance to the attached facility, which can only be done from the outside. In some cases, astronauts may engage in a spacewalk in order to rescue a colleague who is in danger of floating away into the void.
