A spacecraft is any vehicle capable of traveling independently through outer space. Spacecraft come in all shapes and sizes to suit a variety of needs including communications, planetary observation, meteorology, navigation, planetary exploration and space tourism. Some spacecraft may be small, single-person fighter craft or survey vehicles, while other may be capital ships in a space fleet. Many spacecraft serve a specific function such as scientific analysis. Some spacecraft may even be large enough to sustain an entire population of living beings. These types of vessels are generally referred to as generational ships.
