The Soul Gem is a fictional cosmic artifact featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. It also appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series of films.
The Soul Gem is a green gemstone and one of six such items of power that comprise the Infinity Gems that make up the Infinity Gauntlet. The Soul Gem is quasi-sentient and possesses an unwavering hunger to collect the souls of the living. It can rip the soul from a target, imprisoning inside of an interstellar realm known as the Soul World. At one point, the High Evolutionary was in possession of the Soul Gem and bequeathed it to Adam Warlock when he guided him to become the champion of Counter-Earth. [1] Even after Adam left Counter-Earth, he continued to use the Soul Gem and it became a valuable tool against his many enemies such as the Magus and the Universal Church of Truth. When the Living Tribunal formed the Infinity Watch, Adam Warlock continued to act as guardian of the Soul Gem.
Sometime later, the Mad Titan known as Thanos acquired all six Infinity Stones, for he understood the truth of their power. Operating from the ruins of a dead world, Thanos used the gauntlet to create a trans-dimensional conduit and pulled his old foes, the Silver Surfer and Drax the Destroyer to his location. He fitted them into a gold-colored gauntlet and glove, which enabled him to harness the power of all six stones simultaneously. With this newfound power, Thanos regarded himself as a reborn god, whose power and influence dwarfed that of even the Celestials. He then altered Drax's soul to re-motivate his spirit, causing him to attack the Silver Surfer. [2]
