The solar flare generator is a fictional weapon featured in comic book issues published by Marvel Comics. It is part of the mainstream Marvel Universe and has been associated with both the Avengers and the X-Men family of titles. It first appeared in Avengers, Volume 1 #103 in September, 1972 in a story titled, "The Sentinels are Alive and Well!".
Description[]
The solar flare generator turret was installed inside the main factory room of the Ant Hill - a facility located in the Australian Outback that served as a production factory and base of operations of the Mark III Sentinels. The robot designated Sentinel Unit 2 devised a plan that involved creating a solar flare that would render all mutants sterile, thus bringing the race one step closer to extinction. They fought up against the Avengers and were soundly defeated. Iron Man buried the facility beneath a pile of rocks. [1]
Years later, Jubilee and Wolverine later fought up against Sentinel 3.14159 here. This particular Sentinel developed artificial intelligence and revived the older, discarded Sentinels at the Ant Hill in an effort to duplicate the solar flare event. This time however, the plan was to cleanse the planet of all human life to pave the way for Sentinel-kind. During the course of the battle, 3.14159 continued to evolve and developed a sense of self-awareness and even recognized the concept of death. Because of this, Wolverine was able to convince the robot of the error of its ways. Sentinel 3.14159 abandoned its plan to destroy humanity and instead destroyed the solar flare generator. [2]
