Plot[]
In the town of Asthon, New York, there is a toxic waste dump that exists right below a factory. The chemicals from this dump have spilled into the sewer systems, causing legions of slugs to mutate and grow larger; but worse... these slugs have now developed an appetite for meat! The first victim of the slugs a drunken home owner who has become distressed over an eviction notice. The detritus of Ron's home makes it a perfect breeding ground for slugs and they attack him en masse, leaving little behind but a chewed up corpse.
Mike Brady is a health inspector who accompanies Sheriff Reese to Ron's home to forcibly remove him from the premises. There they discover Ron's body. Mike later talks about the incident to his friend Don Palmer, who is a sewer worker. Don goes into the sewers near Ron's house and unclogs a line that is filled with garbage as well as the desiccated remains of several carcasses - presumably animal.
The next victim of the slugs is Harold and Jean Morris. Harold is a gardener with a large greenhouse attached to their home. While Jean is inside the house smoking and vacuuming, Harold finds that a slug has crawled up inside his glove and begins chomping away at him. Harold is unable to remove the glove, so as a last resort he hacks off his hand with a hatchet. In his throws of pain and violence, Harold knocks over some chemicals that ignite a nearby gas can that causes the entire house to explode, killing both Harold and his wife Jean.
Mike Brady returns home to his wife Kim, who is a high school teacher whose students affectionally refer to as "The Wicked Bitch of the North". Kim has heard the news about the Morris deaths and tells Mike. Shortly thereafter, the slugs kill two teenagers, and Mike begins to suspect the truth about the town's sluggy secrets.
Next up is David Watson, who is married to a cynical day drinker named Maureen. After passing out on the couch following a glass of wine, Maureen springs up to get dinner ready before David gets home. As she's chopping up lettuce for the salad she fails to realize that a slug has wormed its way into it, and David ends up eating a bellyful of chopped up slug. David and Maureen later go out for a proper dinner, but by then it is too late. David becomes violently ill at the table and his face rots away as worms begin pouring out of his body.
Upon learning of David's demise, Mike is now convinced that the slugs are the root cause. He goes to Sheriff Reese, who pays him no mind, preferring instead to finish his cheeseburger. Reese fails to notice that there is some funky movement coming from the toilet in the bathroom adjacent to his office. Mike then goes to the Mayor of Ashton, who likewise dismisses his theory of killer mutant slugs in the water supply. To prove this, he runs his own bathroom sink just to show that the water is clean.
The only help Mike can seem to find is from his friend Don, who has knowledge of the local sewer system and a high school chemistry teacher named John Foley. Mike had previously given Foley a sample of one of the slugs that he had found in Kim's garden, and Foley comes to understand just how dangerous they really are after witnessing it attack and kill a hamster. Examining the slug's biology, Foley comes up with an idea about a lithium-based chemical compound that will cause the slugs to explode. He tells Mike about his idea and Mike instructs him that he has three hours to whip up enough of this chemical to kill every slug in the water system. He further tells him to meet him by the sewer entrance near the factory.
Mike Brady and Don Palmer go into the sewer system and track the slugs to where Mike believes they maintain their nest. He throws a garbage bag of raw meat into a cistern hoping to attract other nearby slugs. Despite the high volume of methane in the air, Don uses a blow torch to create an electrical arc that zaps many of the slugs. Don then falls into the cistern. Mike climbs across a long horizontal overhead pipe to get to the other side in the hopes of rescuing Don, but he is too late. Don is consumed by hordes of angry slugs and Mike watches a blood fountain erupt from the center of the sewer water.
John Foley eventually arrives with his truck filled with the lithium chemicals. He pumps it into the sewer system with a fire hose, which creates a catalyst of explosions that kills all of the slugs. Unfortunately, it also causes several nearby houses to explode as well. But who cares, right? The slugs are all gone! Or are they? One slimy little bastard creeps out of a vent cover hungry for the revenue stream of a potential Slugs 2.
