The Skywalker family is a fictional family featured in the Star Wars multimedia franchise. They were first represented in the form of Darth Vader in the original 1977 film Star Wars, which was later given the extended title of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. At the time however, it was unknown that Vader was part of the Skywalker family. The first person in the film series identified by the name Skywalker was Luke Skywalker, with only a passing reference to his supposedly late father. It wasn't until 1980's Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back that it was revealed that Darth Vader was actually Anakin Skywalker, Luke's father. Luke's parentage was confirmed in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, which also revealed that Leia Organa was his twin sister. The background of the Skywalker heritage was explored further in the prequel series. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace introduced Anakin's mother, Shmi Skywalker, as well as Padmé Naberrie, who would one day give birth to Luke and Leia. Padmé's extended family were featured in a cut scene in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and made an actual, albeit brief appearance at the end of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Many years later, the Skywalker family line would be extended in an official canon capacity in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. This film introduced the character of Ben, aka Kylo Ren, who was the son of General Leia and Han Solo, and the grandson of Darth Vader.
