Sigmund and the Sea Monsters is an American children's live-action television series of the adventure and comedy genres. It was produced by Sid & Marty Krofft Television Productions and aired on NBC for two seasons from September 8th, 1973 to October 18th, 1975 with 17 episodes in season one, and 12 episodes in season two, for a total of 29 episodes. The show was created by Si Rose, Sid Krofft, and Marty Krofft. It starred Johnny Whitaker as Johnny Stuart, Scott C. Kolden as Scott Stuart, and Billy Barty as Sigmund the Sea Monster. Other cast members include Mary Wickes as housekeeper Zelda Marshall, and Joe Higgins as Sheriff Chuck Bevans. Rounding out the sea monster cast of characters is Sharon Baird as Big Daddy Ooze, Van Snowden as Sweet Mama Ooze, Larry Larsen as Blurp Ooze, and Paul Gale as Slurp Ooze. Sweet Mama was voiced by Sidney Miller while Walker Edmiston provided the voice ADR for Big Daddy, Blurp & Slurp. With season two, Rip Taylor joined the cast as a recurring character named Sheldon the Sea Genie.
The show takes place in a fictional unnamed town in the state of California. The Stuart family lives very close to the beach and spend a lot of time near Dead Man's Point. While brothers Johnny and Scott carouse on the beach, Zelda Marshall stays at home as the family's housekeeper. Little mention is made of the boys' parents, save that they are almost never home. Within a grotto in one of the caves at Dead Man's Point is another truly dysfunctional family - the Ooze family. They are sea monsters led by the curmudgeon Melvin "Big Daddy" Ooze, his saucy wife Sweet Mama Ooze, their oldest sons Blurp & Slurp and youngest child, Sigmund. Unlike the others, Sigmund does not take delight in scaring humans. This puts him on the outs with his family who consider him a "disgrace" and a "troll" and kick him out of the cave.
Johnny and Scott find Sigmund on the beach after Sigmund tries and fails to scare them. Fascinated at the prospect of an actual living, and seemingly friendly sea monster, they decide to bring him home to their secret clubhouse. Despite his best efforts, Sigmund finds a way of attracting trouble and the boys must keep a constant vigil to make sure that Zelda and local sheriff Chuck Bevans don't learn about Sigmund. Add to that, Sigmund's family is always trying to find a way to bring him back into the fold, or take advantage of him to serve their own ends.
