Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy. Minor islands around it are also considered to be part of Sicily. Sicily and Sardinia comprise the largest islands in the entire Italian Peninsula.
Sicily played a small, yet important role in the 1957 creature feature 20 Million Miles to Earth. In the film, a US space vessel, the XY-21 returns to Earth and crash-lands in the Mediterranean Sea off the shore of Sicily. The surviving crew members of the XY-21 are rescued by a fisherman and a young boy named Pepe. Pepe discovers a canister amongst the astronaut's equipment and opens it, releasing an alien organism from Venus. Fortunately for the locals, the alien is taken out of Sicily bound for Rome before it quickly grows in size and begins terrorizing the country.
