A shield is an item used to deflect oncoming offensive weaponry. Shields have been utilized by soldiers, warriors and military units since the dawn of armed combat. They were used a'plenty in Ancient Egypt, as well as Greece, those pit o'death-kicking mofos over in Sparta, as well as Medieval Europe. Shields are not widely used in military engagements in the modern era, and have been replaced by various types of body armor, though riot control units and SWAT still occasionally employ them.
Some action adventurers and superheroes are known to use shields. The most famous of which is Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, who has a special adamantium/vibranium compound shield that is virtually indestructible. Another Marvel Comics character who uses a shield is the Taskmaster.
A lesser-known shield-slinger over in DC Comics is Jim Harper, the Guardian, who uses a wedge-shaped shield.
