The Sentinel MK IV is a fictional model series of robot featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. They are part of the mainstream Marvel Universe, colloquially referred to as the Earth-616 reality, but have also been represented in stories that take place in alternate realities as well. They are traditionally associated with stories dealing with the X-Men. The Mark IV Sentinels were first introduced in Uncanny X-Men #151 in November, 1981.
The MK IV sentinels stood about twenty feet tall and were comprised of highly durable steel components that could lift in excess of seventy tons. They were equipped with a mutant detection system as well as a learning program that enabled them to adapt their counter-measures in order to combat mutants of varying abilities.
The MK IV sentinels came about as a result of Project Wideawake, which was the successor to the Project Armageddon program instituted by Steven Lang. Project Wideawake was administered by Henry Peter Gyrich.
