Self sacrifice is the act of sacrificing one's own life for the greater good. If you croak while in the presence of your BFF, its good to know that you can tell them in a raspy voice, "I have been... and always will be... your friend" [cough-cough-sputter-die]. If you happen to taking yourself out of the equation in order to save the world from being smitereened by a giant oncoming meteor, its also nice if you get a chance to say a few choice words to your daughter. Some people go really extreme with the self sacrifice. In one example, a crazy old man allowed himself to be cut down by a lightsaber just to inspire some punk kid into becoming a Jedi. The universe is crazy.
