Scream is a 1996 slasher horror film directed by Wes Craven. It is the first in a series that has, to date, included five sequels as well as a satirical spoof series Scary Movie. It premiered on December 18th, 1996 in Los Angeles, California and was released theatrically on December 20th of that year. Scream has received both favorable cult status for its satirical approach to the slasher genre, but has also been heaviliy criticized for perpetuating what many fans have come to regard as watered-down PG-13 fluff, which dominated the genre throughout the mid to late 1990s. The premise of the film revolves around high school student Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell), a teenage girl still coming to terms with the tragic death of her mother, which took place the previous year. Things grow even more complicated as the Woodsboro Slasher, or Ghostface, begins murdering Sidney's friends and seems to have a peculiar interest in Sidney herself.
