Scooti Manista was a supporting protagonist in Doctor Who: The Impossible Planet. Scooti served as a member of the Walker Expedition, a group of humans attempting to locate a power source on Krop Tor, unaware that it was in fact the resting place of the Beast, a powerful primordial entity.
Background[]
Scooti was born in the early 43rd century. Scooti was a young technician with prodigious amounts of talent and was able to earn a spot on the Walker Expedition at a young age. Scooti traveled to the planet of Krop Tor, a planet that was orbiting a black hole. Discovering that this feat was made possible by a powerful energy source, Scooti and her colleagues began to drill towards the planet. Scooti managed to survive the landing on the planet, her commander, Captain Walker, was not so fortunate. Afterwards, Scooti began maintaining the base, seemingly alone, with Zachary Cross Flane, the acting captain as her only support. During her stay, they lost two more crewmembers, Curt and Chenna, under mysterious circumstances. Despite the dangers, Scooti managed to remain alive and in good humor.
Encountering the Doctor[]
Scooti was twenty years old when the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler arrived on the base she was maintaining. At the time of there arrival, Scooti was helping prepare for an upcoming earthquake. Scooti was in the control room, monitoring systems and preparing for a powerful quake. As the quake approached, Scooti announced over the intercom that the earthquake was approaching, interrupting a confrontation between the Security Chief Jefferson, and the new duo.
Scooti finished working at the main station as the duo approached, and was walking over to a secondary station
towards the door. As she came near the door, Jefferson, the guards, and finally the Doctor and Rose came through the door. The new duo surprised the entire room. Scooti herself commented on the arrival of them, confirming that they were indeed real. As Danny began examining them, Scooti sat down, still staring at them.
However, the introductions were quickly interrupted by the earthquake she had warned about struck. Scooti maintained a tight grip as the initial shock came through. As a result she was only shaken a little. Scooti stared at the Doctor as he quipped about the first shock wasn't so bad, before he was knocked back down by a stronger quake. This quake shook Scooti badly as she bounced around the chair. However, she managed to remain uninjured. Immediately afterwards, Scooti began examining her console. When Zach began questioning everyone's status, Scooti initially ignored him. However, when he insisted on a report, she stated that she was fine.
Afterwards, Scooti ran back to the main console to continue checking for damages. While going through the situation,
Scooti listened as Rose inquired about the storm outside and questioned if there was a hurricane. Scooti immediately dismissed this and explained that to have a hurricane, you need to have an atmosphere. Scooti further explained the planet's lack of atmosphere. When Rose questioned Scooti about what was shaking the roof, Scooti was left surprised. Scooti glanced at Ida for help, and Ida took over the explanation. Scooti then stared at the new people surprised, realizing there lack of knowledge of where they were.
Scooti continued to work as Ida began to go around introducing the crew. After introducing Toby, Scooti realized that
she was next. Scooti looked up from her work and smiled warmly at the duo. Ida placed her hands on her shoulder's and explained that her name was Scooti Manista, and was the trainee maintenance officer. Scooti continued smiling in a friendly manner at the crew, before returning to her work as Ida revealed the black hole.
Later, Scooti was still in the control room as the crew began to explain the mission to the Doctor and Rose. Scooti
was sitting at her station as she continued to work. Scooti listened as they explained the existence of the funnel. Danny explained that the funnel was the only way off the planet, and that if it closed, they were trapped on the planet. Scooti, with a smile on her face, joked that they speculate about that. Danny scoffed at her comment and hit her on the head with a scroll. Playfully, Scooti shot an annoyed look at Danny.
Scooti later walked over to the other side of the room, and stayed near Danny. She watched as Rose came over and
questioned Danny about the Ood. Scooti smiled warmly and laughed when Rose made a play on the Ood's name. Scooti then watched as Rose acted in disgust at the idea of the Ood being slaves. Scooti smiled mockingly at her, and joked that she must be a "Friends of the Ood," in a voice that indicated that she thought the idea was ridiculous. She didn't respond to Rose's comment against her views, and let Danny continue to explain the Ood. Later, she observed as the Doctor ran out of the control room upon realizing that the Tardis was in an area affected by the quake.
Night Shift[]
Eventually the entire base transitioned into the night shift, as Ravel's Balero sounded throughout the base. Outside, a
piece of equipment had been damaged. As a result, Scooti went to an airlock. There, she put on one of the spacesuit, and ventured outside. Scooti walked towards the equipment with a large wrench in one hand. While outside, the harsh winds on the planet buffeted the small girl. Despite that, Scooti managed to stay on her feet and reached the equipment. Scooti examined the machine, and tightened a few bolts. Scooti examined the machine and discovered that it was indeed fixed. Scooti then raised her communication device towards her helmet faceplate. With a smile on her face, Scooti announced that she had fixed the equipment. After that, Scooti braved the harsh conditions again and returned to the base. There, she removed her spacesuit.
After her excursion outside, Scooti chose to venture towards Habitation 3 since she felt hungry. There she began to
gather food from the local Ood. While she was gathering food, Zach ordered Danny to leave for Ood Habitation. Shortly after the announcement, Rose came over to the counter. Seeing how confused Rose looked, Scooti looked at her and smiled warmly. Scooti assured Rose that she could grab anything that she wanted. Rose nodded in assent, glad for the friendly response. However, still with a smile, Scooti warned Rose not to try green. Then with a mischievous look, added that she shouldn't try the green either. Upon noticing Rose's amusement, Scooti laughed. Scooti then walked over and joined Ida and Jefferson at their table that Danny had vacated.
Later in the night, Scooti was still sitting at a table with Jefferson. Suddenly, the lights in Habitation 3 began to flicker.
Concerned, Scooti glanced around trying to figure out what was going on. However, Zach reported to Ida that it was the Scarlet System dying overhead. Scooti observed the system being drawn into a black hole, amazed by the sight. After the Doctor requested to have the window remain unshuttered, Ida glanced at Scooti. She requested that Scooti check the lockdown and ensure that it is being enforced. With a smile, Scooti nodded in assent. Scooti then stood up, and left the room alone to continue her duties.
Delivering Paperwork[]
While Scooti was checking the lockdown of the base
, Scooti was instructed to deliver an expenditure report to Toby, the base archaeologist. After recovering the file, Scooti went towards Toby's room. Eventually, Scooti reached his room, and entered. Scooti walked through the quarters and announced that she had his expenditure. However, she began to trail off in the middle of her sentence. Scooti quickly noticed that the room was devoid of it's supposed inhabitant. Confused, Scooti looked around the room, checking his bed to see if he was asleep. However, she quickly learned that the room was indeed empty. This left Scooti confused, since she had clearly expected to find the archaeologist.
Scooti quickly recovered from the initial shock. Deciding to leave the matter alone, Scooti walked towards Toby's cluttered desk. With the lamp shining on her face, Scooti placed the expenditure report down on the desk, over a piece of work. While looking down, Scooti glanced at the strange symbols that Toby was studying.
While she was glancing at the strange symbol, the intercom was activated by the computer. Over the intercom, the computer announced the opening of Door 41. This caused Scooti to break away from her fascination with the symbols on the page. Scooti looked up confused.
Scooti then turned her head towards the direction of the announcement of the door opening. As she turned around, the intercom relayed a new message, that Door 41 had now been closed. Scooti began to ponder this new information that she overheard.
Scooti turned back towards the desk, with the light shining on her face again. Scooti's expression was deeply
perturbed as she contemplated what she had overheard. The announcement made her feel very uneasy, realizing that it didn't seem likely. Scooti repeated 41, going over her knowledge of the base. Eventually Scooti realized what had happened. Scooti began deeply concerned as she realized that trouble was brewing. Concerned, Scooti turned on her heel. She then sprinted out of the room to discover the events that had taken place.
Investigation[]
Scooti quickly managed to exit Toby's room. Quickly, Scooti managed to reach Door 40. Scooti opened the door, and
walked into the section that contained Door 41, letting Door 40 close on it's own. The computer announced the closing of Door 40, as Scooti walked with a brisk pace over to door 41. Eventually reaching it, Scooti immediately walked over to the terminal next to the door.
Scooti pressed the button on the console in order to begin her investigation into what had occurred. Panting from her sprint, Scooti hurriedly questioned the computer if it had indeed open and closed Door 41. Upon receiving her question, the computer confirmed that it had indeed open and closed the door. Scooti was surprised by the computers response to this, especially it's lack of elaboration. Scooti quickly explained that Door 41 was an airlock for the base. Scooti proceeded to chastise the computer, reminding it that they were in the nightshift and that no one was allowed to leave the base. Scooti then sighed, and took a deep breath. Finished chastising the computer, Scooti questioned whether someone had exited the base. The computer quickly confirmed this, but didn't explain further. Scooti waited a moment, expecting the computer to continue. However, Scooti quickly realized that the computer wasn't going to elaborate. Sighing in annoyance, Scooti asked who it was, her tone indicating her annoyance. However, the computer claimed that it couldn't identify who exited the base. This response surprised Scooti, who was left reeling from it. However, she recovered quickly and contemplated her next response. Scooti then requested that the computer identify which spacesuit had been taken.
However, the computer responded that no spacesuit had been taken from storage. This response annoyed Scooti. With an annoyed smile, Scooti began to explain how it was impossible to survive without a spacesuit. However, she quickly abandoned the response. Concluding that the computer was likely faulty, Scooti gave up.
Scooti removed her hand from the computer and brought her wrist communicator to her mouth. She then pressed the
buttons and activated the device. Scooti then called Zach. Scooti explained to Zach that she felt that Door 41 was likely broken. Scooti then began to elaborate by explaining that the computer had been trying to tell her that someone had left the base. She then removed her finger from the device to let Zach respond.
However, instead of a response, only static came through the device. Confused, Scooti tapped the device again. She
questioningly called out for Zach, hoping for a response. However, upon removing her finger, she once again got nothing but static. Scooti quickly became frustrated by this development. Scooti pressed it again, and forcefully yelled Zach. However, Scooti continued to get nothing but static. This new development left Scooti confused and frustrated.
Scooti gave up on trying to call Zach, realizing that something must be wrong with her communication device. She also knew that she would need to identify the problem, and for that she would need to access the base computer. Reluctantly, Scooti glanced at the console for door 41, clearly apprehensive about using the device she felt was broken. Sighing in annoyance, Scooti pressed the button to activate the console again. Scooti, in a forceful tone, commanded that the computer identify the fault in her communication device. Scooti's voice was full of frustration, her tone indicating a complete lack of patience for anymore ridiculous responses. However, the computer responded that there was no fault with the device. Scooti's frustration quickly came to a head as she became angry with the computer. Returning to her original query, Scooti yelled angrily at the computer to tell her who went outside. Scooti then stood there panting in frustration, unsure of what the computer would respond with next.
The computer quickly responded to her query. This time the computer responded with, "He is awake." This response
threw Scooti off and she quickly became confused. Not understanding what it had said, and anticipating that she had simply heard wrong, Scooti responded with "What," her tone indicating her confusion and lack of comprehension. However the computer repeated, "He is awake." This time, Scooti's confusion was joined with fear. Not understanding what it was trying to communicate left Scooti frightened and confusion. Scooti was thrown off by the strangeness of the situation, not understanding what the computer could possibly be trying to say. Frightened and confused, Scooti asked the computer to respond, curious to know, but also afraid of what she could discover next. This time the computer responded with "He bathes in the black sun." This response left Scooti completely shaken. Now deeply frightened, Scooti was left speechless. Scared and confused, Scooti began to back away.
The frightened girl back away from the console a good couple feet before stopping. She then stood there, her feet
glued to the surface of the floor. Scooti continued to stare at the console she had been using with a large amount of fear. Scooti pondered the things that the computer had said to her and attempted to come to terms with them. However, the strangeness of the situation left her without any good answers.
Suddenly, down the hall, a new noise began. Scooti glanced towards the noise and noticed that the shield in front of the window to the outside had begun to open on it's own without anyone to do it. Scooti quickly realized that this would allow her to learn what was going on. However, she was utterly terrified at what she might find, especially with the machines acting haywire and on their own. Scooti considered her options while staring at the opening viewport. Scooti eventually concluded that she had to know what was happening. Apprehensive, Scooti walked towards the window, ready, yet frightened, to discover the truth of the situation.
Temptation[]
Scooti walked down the hall over to the window that was right next to Door 42, the third door in the section. Scooti
arrived as the shield over the viewport opened all the way, revealing the surface of the planet to the young girl. Scooti stood in front of the window, with her reflection shining back on her on the transparent glass. Scooti then looked out onto the surface of the planet, ready to discover the truth, whether she wanted to or not. There, standing on the surface of the planet, was Toby. The harsh winds of the planet buffeted him as his clothes and hair blew wildly in the wind. However, he stood there, completely unfazed. Most miraculously however, was his complete lack of a spacesuit. Toby stood on the surface of a hazardous planet, without any protection, and was unharmed.
Inside the section, Scooti stood watching Toby completely transfixed and unable to move or look away from the sight
in front of her. Scooti's eyes widened in shock and fear at the sight that was in front of her. The words of the computer about no spacesuit being logged out finally dawned on her, realizing that it was not broken. However, that was all that became clear to her. Everything else was beyond confusing and frightening to the girl. Scooti's voice failed her, and she could only stare at Toby slack jawed as she attempted to come to terms with what was before her.
Outside, Toby appeared to become aware of her presence and that she was staring at him. Toby turned around and
glanced towards the open viewport. There he noticed the frightened girl staring at him in fascination and terror. Toby's eyes were blood red, instead of the normal blue. In addition, his entire body was covered in the strange symbols he was studying. Realizing her fascination and fear at the sight in front of her, Toby grinned wildly at her. He appeared to be delighted by her presence, and even more pleased with her fear and confusion.
As Toby came to face her, Scooti became even more unnerved, and her eyes managed to widen even further in shock. Toby's wild grin left Scooti even more shaken, as the young girl struggled to come to terms with what was in
front of her eyes. Scooti now realized that Toby was indeed still alive, even though it was seemingly impossible. The fact that he stood outside unharmed and smiled at her made the idea that he was dead impossible. Stunned, Scooti continued to stare at Toby transfixed. Eventually, Scooti managed to recover a small fragment of her voice. Scooti uttered Toby in a quiet and frightened voice, barely higher then a whisper. With the same low and frightened voice, Scooti mumbled about how there was no air. However, the girl trailed off from her thought as the shock of the situation began to dawn on her. Scooti was left completely shaken and unable to comprehend what was before her.
Toby observed the entire display in front of him as Scooti attempted to come to terms with his presence. Her response
amused Toby, whose demented grin widened even further. Toby then raised one of his hands, and maintained direct eye contact with the girl in front of him. He then began motioning at her with a single finger. Toby instantly began urging her to join him outside in the vacuum.
Scooti was still staring at Toby as he began motioning at her, still trying to come to terms with the situation and failing. With the motion, Toby's powerful presence began to invade the confused girl's mind. With her mind being so
scattered and unnerved by the sight, Scooti was unable to mount any mental resistance. As a result, his demand to come forward quickly began to overwhelm her. Helpless to refuse his order, Scooti raised her left arm, the one with her communicator towards Toby. Her palm was outstretched, as if trying to touch Toby. Scooti continued to stare at Toby, her eyes hypnotized, as she fell under his powerful influence.
Toby noticed her easy compliance to his demands. The knowledge of this made Toby grin even wider, delighted at his ability to control the girl. Deciding to continue solidifying his control over Scooti, Toby continued to motion her toward him. Increasing in intensity, Toby began to use two fingers.
Scooti continued reaching towards Toby, completely mesmerized by his power and his hold over her mind. Scooti continued to stare at him, only blinking occasionally. Scooti continued to fall deeper and deeper under the sway of her colleague. Her mental resistance to Toby continued to dissipate as she became his thrall more and more. However, Scooti appeared to become afraid slowly. Her eyes began to moisten as she continued to stare at him.
Realizing that he almost had control of her, Toby's grin lessened into a dark, sinister smile. He continued to urge the girl towards him.
Scooti continued to stare at Toby, still deeply under his sway. However, Scooti's eyes began to threaten tears as she
continued to stare at her colleague. Scooti continued to reach towards him. Nearly under his dominance now, Scooti continued to feel overwhelmed. With tears threatening to roll out, Scooti continued to fall deeper and deeper under Toby's control.
However, Scooti eventually managed to break her eye contact with Toby. With tears threatening to poor out from her fearful eyes, Scooti glanced at her outstretching arm. Scooti looked over her arm, as it dawned on her what Toby was attempting to do to her. Scooti then brought her arm back down to her side.
Scooti then looked back towards the window and stared at Toby yet again. However, her fascination was replaced with terror and revulsion. Scooti realized that Toby had been attempting to take control of her mind, that her friend had used his new power to violate the sanctity of her will. Hurt and frightened, Scooti stared at Toby as tears began to roll down her face. Scooti yelled, "No! Stop it you can't be." Scooti quickly regained complete control of her mind. Scooti then looked towards Toby, a pleaded expression on her face, as tears rolled from her eyes. Scooti then stood there, completely shaken, trying to regain her wits.
Death[]
Outside, Toby continued to look towards the window as he listened to Scooti plead for him to stop and break free of his
control. Instead of accepting her plea, Toby instead glared at the girl with homicidal rage. Using the hand that Toby had been gesturing with, Toby formed a fist.
Instantly, strange cracking sounds filled the air, and a strange white cloud formed on the window in front of her face.
Still shaken, Scooti was unnerved further by Toby's glare towards her. Frightened that he may try to harm her again, Scooti began to attempt to locate the source of the sound. As a result, Scooti frantically scanned the window, trying to locate what was causing the sound.
Suddenly, a small crack appeared in the center of the window in front of her. From there it began to spread rapidly.
Scooti gasped in complete horror as she noticed the crack and saw that it was continuing to spread and get larger and larger. Scooti glanced at Toby in complete shock, horror, and disbelief as she realized that he was causing the window to crack and splinter. Scooti knew that Toby was now indeed trying to kill her. The window was the only thing protecting her from the harsh elements of the vacuum. Once it broke, she would be dragged into space. With tears in her eyes, Scooti broke eye contact with Toby, and spun around, horrified that her friend was trying to brutally murder her.
Scooti turned on her heel, and faced towards Door 40, the same door that she had initially entered the section from. Scooti then sprinted down the corridor towards the door, desperate to escape the doomed section, and get away from her homicidal crewmate. While running, Scooti yelled at the door to open, in a desperate, yet controlled voice. Scooti was desperately hoping that the door would be open so that she could put distance between her and Toby. Upon reaching the door, Scooti attempted to turn the wheel, but it wouldn't budge. Scooti, realizing the door was still locked, became frightened. Still trying to control herself, Scooti commanded the door to open again, her voice mostly calm, but with a little fear. Meanwhile, Scooti looked towards the cracking window.
Despite her command, and even pressing the button, the door continued to ignore Scooti's pleas to open. Frightened, Scooti couched down and began to pull desperately at the door. Scooti screamed at the door to open, desperate to escape her impending death. Meanwhile, Scooti continued to look at the cracking window, which further increased her panic. Scooti's eyes began to threaten tears again as her fear increased.
Soon the window became completely filled with cracks, and it was obviously going to shatter at any time now. Despite this, the door remained sealed to the girl, and she was trapped in the doomed section. Scooti's remaining composure vanished, and Scooti screamed shrilly at the door to open, as tears ran freely down her face. Scooti continued to desperately pull at the door, terrified of dying.
Scooti was continuing to tug at the door, while screaming at it to open. Outside, while she was mid-command, Toby
unclenched his fist. As a result, the glass instantly shattered before Scooti's eyes. Air began rushing out of the section as alarms blazed. Scooti was instantly grabbed by the powerful vacuum. Her fingers were ripped from the door wheel, and she began to be pulled towards the window. Scared out of her wits, Scooti screamed hysterically as she was dragged out of the base.
Post-Mortem[]
Her demise managed to destabilize the base, forcing her surviving friends to flee. After recovering, they realized that
Scooti wasn't with them. Zach reported that her chip indicated that she was in Habitation 3. However, the crew quickly realize that Scooti isn't with them. That's when the Doctor looks up at the still open overhead window and discovers her. Scooti is in the vacuum of space, her hair flying around her head, her eyes blank, and skin pale, clearly deceased.
This revelation of her fate horrifies the entire crew. As they report her death, Scooti's body begins to turn. She then flies towards the black hole as Ida closes the hatch and reveals that the young girl was only 20 years old.
Personality[]
Scooti appeared to be an extremely kind and warm-hearted person. Upon meeting the Doctor and Rose, she immediately treated with warmth and kindness. As a result, despite only knowing her briefly, they were both deeply distraught by their new friend's death. Scooti was also clearly quite intelligent, being able to earn a relatively important position, despite her extremely young age. In addition, she proved to be quick-thinking and was able to adapt to new circumstances quickly. Despite this, like most from her era, she appeared to have no issue with Ood as slaves.
In most of her appearances, Scooti appeared to smile easily, indicating her optimistic and happy sides. In addition, she was quite humorous, cracking jokes and laughing freely. Overall, she appears to have been very well like by her crewmates, as shown by their devastation at her death. Scooti appeared to be close with Ida and Danny, with Ida appearing to be a maternal figure to her. In addition, even Jefferson appeared to have a soft spot for her, as her demise caused him to break his stoic nature, and even appeared to be on the verge of tears. Along with that, she appeared to enjoy sitting with him as shown by her sitting with him during dinner and never leaving.
In addition, Scooti was a rather brave young girl, willing to endure the dangerous mission she was on. Even when faced with the strange situations in the investigation into door 41, Scooti managed to mostly maintain her composure, only losing her temper briefly. She managed to even keep from breaking down completely upon discovering Toby in the vacuum, only truly losing control of herself when faced with certain death. On top of that, she proved to have an extremely strong will and firm moral center, as she was able to resist the control of the Beast without any outside assistance, a feat none of her crew, or even Rose managed.
Appearance[]
Scooti is an attractive, short, and thin young woman, with an hourglass shaped figure and little muscle growth. She possessed thick, long, dirty blond hair that was curly, and had blue eyes, and pale skin. Scooti wore a black tank top, blue jeans, black boots, and a workbelt. On her left arm she had her wrist communicator, and on her right she had 3 thin wrist bands.
