Scalping is an unorthodox physical procedure that involves using a bladed instrument to remove the scalp from a living or once-living mammal. During such processes, the hair remains attached to the scalp. Warriors from some Native American tribes took the removed scalp as a trophy, demonstrating their victory over an adversary. During the period of American colonialism, European bounty hunters likewise acquired the scalps of Native Americans. In speculative fiction, scalping is most often seen in media of the horror genre. It has also been featured in films of the western genre.
