- Enhanced intellect: Exposure to gamma radiation elevated Sterns' mental faculties, giving him a genius level intellect. A master of nearly all forms of science, Sterns' specialty was in the field of robotics.

- The character of Samuel Sterns was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko.
- Red Leader is also the call sign of X-wing fighter pilot Garven Dreis from the 1977 film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
- The Leader was ranked as IGN's 63rd Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time. [1]
- The Leader is responsible for the creation and/or modification of many technological devices. One of the more notable of which is the Murder Module, which he stole from the United States Army. [2]
- As the Red Leader, the Leader actually bears a strong resemblance to Sinestro - a DC Comics supervillain and foe of Green Lantern.

Alternate versions[]
- The Leader appeared in both the 1994 Iron Man animated series and the 1996 Incredible Hulk animated series. In both programs he was voiced by Matt Frewer.
- A version of Sam Sterns appeared in the 2008 feature film Incredible Hulk where he was playe by actor Tim Blake Nelson. Although the movie version of Sterns was mutated after exposure to Bruce Banner's gamma radiated blood, he did not become a supervillain.
