Biography[]
Sam Duke was a young man from California and the brother of Montana Duke. He was close friends with Joey Cavanaugh and Brooke Thompson and was slated to be the Best Man at their wedding.
In 1983, on the night before the wedding, Sam went to Brooke's place, because she was scared of the dark, and did not wish to be alone for the evening. As Brooke put it, he came over only to crash out for the evening, and slept on the couch. Joey Cavanaugh, who nursed a fierce streak of jealousy, sat outside Brooke's house and took note that Sam never left. This led him to believe that Sam and she had sex with one another.
The following day, during the wedding ceremony, Joey stood at the altar and accused Brooke of being unfaithful. He then pulled out a handgun and shot Sam Duke, killing him. He then shot Brooke's father, and finally himself. [2]
Montana Duke, believing that Sam and Brooke actually did have sex with one another, blamed Brooke for his death and swore revenge. She manipulated Brooke into becoming a camp counselor with her at Camp Redwood. Montana had been involved with wanted murderer Richard Ramirez - the "Night Stalker", and sent Ramirez after Brooke.
