Sam Alexander is a fictional costumed superhero featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is the fourth Marvel Comics character to go by the code name of Nova, and the third of such characters with a connection to the Nova Corps. He first appeared in the Point One one-shot special, which yielded the rebranding of the "Marvel Now!" imprint that involved titles and storylines taking place following the events of the major crossover storyline Avengers vs. X-Men. Sam Alexander made two appearances in Avengers vs. X-Men, as well as a crossover appearance in Uncanny X-Men, Volume 2 #19 before branching off into his own Nova solo series in 2013. This incarnation of Nova is largely inspired by the Nova character featured in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, where he is voiced by actor Logan Miller.

Overview[]

Sam Alexander was a fifteen-year-old boy who lived with his father, Jesse Alexander, and little sister Kaelynn in the town of Carefree, Alexander. Growing up, Sam would listen to tales from his often inebriated father, who would speak of length about once being a Centurion in the interstellar peacekeeping agency known as the Nova Corps. Naturally, Sam never believed him. His perspective changed radically however on the day he was visited by an alien green warrior woman named Gamora and a talking raccoon, who invited him to become the newest member of the Nova Corps. Gifted with the costume and power of a Nova Centurion, Sam Alexander became a teenage human rocket. [1]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Other characters named Nova include Sam's predecessor, Richard Rider, who is the first and most well-known character to bear the name. He was the main character in the first four Nova comic book titles. The second Nova was Frankie Raye, who started out as a supporting character in Fantastic Four, Volume 1 and later became a major recurring character in Silver Surfer. Another character is the Kree soldier Ko-rel, who took on the mantle of Nova after being imbued with a fraction of the power of the Xandarian Worldmind.
  • The helmet that Sam wears is the same one that was once worn by his father, Jesse Alexander.
  • The first supervillain that Sam Alexander faced off against was Diamondhead, who was an old foe of Richard Rider. Sam proved victorious over Diamondhead and abandoned him in the middle of the Arizona desert. [2]
